Berjaya Rooms on stilts

Following a newspaper advertisement of AirAsia, we decided on our travel date just about 4 weeks before our trip. As always another last minute decision. This was planned to be a family trip and a much awaited one for us as it would be the first time we would be taking our parents out of country and first flight for my mum-in-law. But the challenge was, we didn’t have her passport with us yet, not applied either :-P

After all the circus of running around we managed to get her passport 7 days before the travel date. Next hurdle was to get the visa stamping completed before we left Bangalore. Although our travel agent Mr.Selvaraj from GoZo Holidays assured us that we would receive the stamped passports well within time, on the day of our travel V collected the passports from the courier office…why take chances of having delayed delivery home :-P

Now that one part of tension & adventure was done, we headed for Mangalore where my grandma’s 90^th got celebrated. Fun, music, dance & drama. All done on Sunday. Monday morning at 3.00AM we were on our way to Tiruchirapally. Why not Bangalore you must be wondering, well we got cheaper flight tickets from Trichy. Managed to save 4k per person (7 people). With enough breaks to keep V rested we managed to reach Trichy airport by 5pm. The airport authorities were helpful in guiding us and allowing us to park our car there for a week at Rs.300/day. Our flight was at 11.56PM from Trichy to KL (4hrs flight). From KL we had our flight to Langkawi-LGK (1hr flight). The to-n-fro cost of KL-LGK-KL flight costed us about Rs.3500 per person including 20kg luggage. No moving around between different airports. Since both our flights were Air Asia, international & domestic boarding were in the same airport.

Day 1::

At Langkawi we had an Innova waiting for us. Stay was at Berjaya. Cold welcome drink in that heat was refreshing. Beautiful resort, HUGE would be an understatement. All rooms made of wood, offers wooden floor, comfortable bed, beautiful balcony giving you the forest view and bathrooms with glass showers. Berjaya is considered one of the best resorts of Langkawi, and our agent had booked us 3 rooms in Rainforest chalet, meaning giving us a feel of the rainforest.

It turned out that two rooms were interconnected with a common door making it easy for kids to run between grandparents rooms.

After settling down and freshening up, called for buggy service & headed for lunch at Beach Indian restaurant at the resort. Simple restaurant with good service. Dal, Rice & French fries is what we ordered for all and since mum insisted on fruits got a plate of fresh tropical fruits. After a satisfying simple meal walked down to the beach attached to the resort and rested at beach outdoor wooden bench with umbrella.

We didn’t realize that we all slept for close to 2-2.5hrs under it while kids were busy playing in the sand. Spent all evening at the beach, sipping on mocktails at the beach bar. V & kids tried the water scooter. The resort charged us 200MYR for 30 mins water scooter ride.

It took us a while to know that we had hungry tummys because we were closing in on dinner time- It gets dark only after 7.30PM. You will know what am talking about when you experience it- skip evening snack thinking at around 6.30 when it gets dark you’ll eat something and then realize you are in a different country where sun sets an hour later!

We decided to have an early dinner at the Thai restaurant at the resort. This restaurant is on the other end of the resort on stilts, so we had to book a buggy to go. Ordered for some rice with Veggie green and red thai gravy & spring rolls. Tasty food- not spicy, very flavorful. This restaurant is outdoor on stilts. The candle light adds to the mood. Good service & a smiling face is what welcomes you here.

Day 2::

Morning 8.45AM we were at the lobby restaurant for buffet breakfast. It was a treat to the eyes & stomach. Yummy food. For Non vegetarian folks the spread was larger. For us vegetarians / eggitarians we had variety of

Fresh & Cold- fruits, vegetables & sauces to prepare our own salad, fruits juices.

Fresh & hot- pan cakes & waffles with various sauces, paratha (like kerala layered paratha), Jala roti (interesting new dish), baked beans, 2-3 types of indian curries, baked sides, mashed potato on one day and Hashbrown on another

Baked- Muffins, Danish (3 varieties), variety of Breads and egg

Ready food- Cornflakes, canned fruits, flavored yogurt with fruits, cheese slices

Eagle Square

Not knowing what kind of food options we would get for lunch we filled our tummies and left for Eagle Squarealso known as Dataran Lang. Man-made view point which has a 12 meter long eagle statue which is considered the emblem of Langkawi. It was a quiet place by the water side.

Fun at Underwater World

Next was the Underwater world. This is spread across 6 acres & a great place to spend time for both young and old. We saw Araipamas (the world's largest freshwater fish) at the entrance. This place is divided into three sections: Tropical Rainforest, Temperate and Sub-Antarctic. The Sub-Antarctic is the most popular section because of the penguins. A separate section has been created for the birds, this place also has a small store with a guy trying to sell you photography with his pythons. We didn’t take the pictures but got to touch the large python he had in his basket. Variety of fishes, lizards, reptiles all in different tanks. Lastly there’s a giant walk-through underwater tunnel tank which houses an extensive number of fish including sharks, stingrays, turtles, Large water spiders, sea horse, jelly fishes, so many more names which I can’t recollect. Basically the whole underwater sea world has been housed here. For the kids specially, there a section near the cafeteria where touch screen machines have been kept. One can color the animal of your choice and push those animals into a large screen where all the images get animated automatically and the animals start moving. So you actually create your own animated jungle. At the exit is where we have the duty-free shop. If you want to shop for chocolates/ liquor, this is the place. I did a comparison on the prices in other duty free shops we visited, this place has its lowest rates on chocolates, cheaper than international airport duty-free store too. Closest price match was at the domestic airport duty-free shop.

Lunch was at a small place- Tomato. This guy prepared fresh dal, rice & watermelon juice just for us. Where the lunch & dinners at Berjaya was costing us 200-250 MYR this meal costed us just 54MYR. This place is run by a tamilian. Self-service meals option. Works well for the non-vegetarians who love to eat variety and in large quantities.

@ Oriental Village

After late lunch we were taken to OrientalVillage which is 10 mins drive from Berjaya. This is where we went for our first cable car ride experience. Surprise element was a complimentary movie experience before we hopped on to the cable car- Skydome. This takes you on a virtually realistic roller coaster ride giving you a 360 degree view of Langkawi. After a short 10 min movie experience we headed for cable car ride.

Awesome!!! The whole system is so well manned by people asking you to line up and getting ready to step into the moving gondola and then climbing off when you arrive. The small windows in the Gondola were not opening properly, so we ended up feeling a little hot…could be with the nervousness too, of hanging at a height for the first time :-D . First stop was at middle station. You have a small view point to take a look at the distance you’ve covered in the first gondola and enjoy the cool breeze. From this middle station you hop onto another Gondola to reach the Top station. View from here is breathtaking and you can enjoy the cool breeze sitting on the benches around the place. Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls which is supposed to be one of the views on your way in cable car was dry.

What I am not sure is, if we missed the sky bridge or was it closed. I remember seeing a closed for maintenance board, but not sure if it was the access for skybridge. No regrets though. With old and kids accompanying us, I guess it wasn’t really a miss. After soaking in the views & breeze we started back in the cable car to the Oriental village. Truly a wonderful experience. This place also has many small shops, some space for kids to play dashing cars. You can pick your souvenirs here if you still haven’t done street shopping. We got our kids to experience a 4D 10 min movie. Just the two of them in the theatre which could hold about 12. Tired n hungry after all the walking around, we sat down to have some Home made icecream from Gelato Cabana. Yummy it was, a must try. Slightly higher priced at compared the ones sold in the stores of Oriental village, but the lady serves you a large portion of icecream and you are definitely assured of the quality. Ask for taste if you are not sure which flavor to pick.

After we were done, our guide drove us back to Berjaya. Kids & V jumped into the Jacuzzi and stayed in until dinner time. Dinner this time was again at the beach Indian restaurant. They had live music going on. Tried the mini meal kind of option. All of us tool Tried the roti with mixed veg gravy, aloo gobi with roti, rice with palak paneer. Tasty food. Post dinner, back to the room in buggy.

Day 3::

Started again with sumptuous breakfast at Berjaya and headed for Island hopping tour.

Pregnant Maident Island

We were first taken in a speed boat to Tasik Dayang Bunting (Pregnant Maiden Lake). The mountain around this lake look like a pregnant woman in lying down position. This lake is the largest fresh water lake.

After you have hopped down from your boat, it’s a long walk down to the lake. You can also rent row boats, water scooters here. Many monkeys on the way trying to snatch away plastic bags or water bottles. We didn’t see them trying to grab regular hand bags. Seeing this happening, some ladies stuffed the bags they were carrying under their t-shirts.

You are normally are given an hour on this island and it takes about 10-15 mins to walk down to lake & another 15-20 mins back, next 5-10 mins goes in contemplating if we should enter the water for a swim. You have guys renting you the life jackets too. They have also provided change rooms here, so that way I think its well planned. Daughter insisted on a life jacket and jumped into the water once she had one. Son refused and enjoyed watching the fishes eating bread. Grandparents gave company to my son. V also jumped into the water with my daughter. Another 15 mins in water that was and we realized that it was already time to get back to the boat. Walking back was tiring…first set of steps is a little strenuous for the old. Carrying small water bottles is a must.

There is belief that a woman who has been unable to conceive may have a child after bathing in this lake. Although the water looks very inviting, the story about the pregnant maiden is eerie. The story of Tasik Dayang Bunting is The favourite bathing pool of a celestial princess named Mambang Sari was said to be Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden). A prince, Mat Teja, fell madly in love with her and tricked her into marrying him. Sadly, their child died from a mysterious illness when the child was seven days old. The grieving Mambang Sari left the child's body in the lake.

Eagle watching@Pulau Singa Besar

Back sweating, in the speed boat, our guide took for eagle watching at a nearby island- Pulau Singa Besar. We are not allowed to get off from the boat. Clear skies, quiet water surrounded by green forests is what you see. A sudden ugghhh smell filled the air. Our guide had bought a large bag full of chicken pieces to be thrown for the eagles. He threw some into water and that’s when the birds suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Many eagles swooped down the sky to pick their meat and fly away.

Pulau Beras Basah

After watching for about 10 mins we headed for Pulau Beras Basah (Wet Rice Island). Quiet and clean beach with white sand and lots of shells & coral. You can go snorkeling here or just lie down in the water or rest under the shady trees. You get to spend about an hour again on this beach. You again have monkeys here, so make sure you keep your belongings safe. Kids had a great time here swimming. This beach has small waves making it perfect for kids to play. We just wet our feet and relaxed under the shades of the trees. An hour spent, we were back on the speed boat, enjoying the cool breeze again before getting back to the jetty point.

Lunch was at an Sagar- Indian restaurant on the way back. The guy at the door is very welcoming, but the service turns out not so great when they realize that we are vegetarians and are not going to bill them heavy. Food was tasty. Poori, Chana batura, Chapatis, rajma, mixed subji, lassi. It definitely tasted North Indian. Clean washrooms and good ambience. Large Coolers and fans placed around to manage the heat. After lunch we headed for quick street shopping back near Underwater world area. This place is full of small shops…perfect street shopping experience. We found a small massage parlour and we pushed my mum-in-law to go in for a foot massage. 30MYR for a 30 mins massage. My mum-in-law certified that they did a good job and relieved her of the leg pain she had been undergoing for sometime. While she was at the massage parlour we completed our shopping- souvenir, tshirts, dresses, shorts. After a satisfying shopping experience we were back at Berjaya. Evening spent at the swimming pool. Kids spent close to 2-2.5hrs wading in the water. They have a large and well maintained pool. While the kids were in the water, my parents n mum-in-law rested on the pool benches watching over kids and V and I walked up to the beach and spent our alone time. Dinner was at the lobby restaurant. They customized their pizza for us. We ordered for some veg pizzas with cocktails and mocktails. Good food accompanied with some lovely live music. The ladies who were performing also sang 2 hindi numbers. After dinner we sent our parents & kids back to the room in the buggy and returned back to enjoy the music until 12.30am. The Live music sessions usually continue till 1.00am.

Day 4::

Got up late and headed for breakfast. Post breakfast we returned to our rooms, packed our bags and got ready to check-out. Next stop was supposed to Kuala-lumpur. Afternoon 3.30PM flight from Langkawi to KL. We reached the airport early, so ended up spending a lot of time window shopping and some chocolate shopping. 1hr flight from Langkawi to KL and a long 1-1.5hrs drive from Airport to Grand seasons hotel. This hotel has a good view of the twin towers but we didn’t a room with a good view. This is a large 4-star, but an old legacy hotel. We were given 3 rooms on 13^th floor. Rooms have centralized AC with possibility of adjusting the temperature, but that doesn’t really work. Even with AC switched off in our room, we had a cold room. No fan option. Centralized Switch board for all lights is on one of the bedside tables..press button switches. Old type box TV. No geyser to heat up your water, Carpetted floors, attached rooms, wifi only in lobby. The attached room concept worked well for my parents & mum-in-law as they could keep the common door between the two rooms open all the time so that the kids could move around with ease. For us, it turned out bad because the room adjacent to us probably had some boys staying over. Late night laughter and smoking disturbed us. All the smoke from their room was in ours. Windows cannot be opened to get in fresh air. So the overall experience for us in this hotel was not great and breakfast when compared with Berjaya was average.

The big plus we saw was the connectivity to mono rail. You walk out of the hotel to Chowkit and you can take the monorail to City Sentral. For Indians who are looking for some Indian food or veg food, a walk down on City Sentral area will take you to Gopala (Pure veg- no onion or garlic). You will enjoy Dosa & masala or ginger tea here for sure. You also have Haldirams just outside the station, if you want to pack some north indian food or want to try some chats. The other place for Indian food would be Sangeetha or Saravana Bhavan on Lebuh Ampang street. We tried Sangeeta and it definitely offered us good food & quick service. Day4 evening we decided to eat out since eating at the hotel would have been expensive. When we enquired about the cab with our tour guide, we were told that he would charge 40MYR per hour. So instead we took the monorail 25MYR one way for 7 of us. Dinner at Gopala was 54MYR. So all in all we spent 104MYR for our dinner, along with a good experience of monorail ride.

Day 5::

Buffet Breakfast at Grand seasons- Fruits, Juice, Bread butter jam, Egg, Dosa, Idly sambar, upma, Bread pudding, Muffin done by 9.00am and at the lobby we had our tour guide Mr.Dana waiting with his mini van having Bas parsiaran written on it. We noticed that most buses had this written on it…later we got to know that it meant tourist bus and meant that locals could not travel in it for moving around the city. It was strictly meant for tourist visits only. We were first taken to Pewter factory (Tin factory). This place also displays Onyx jewellery. Polite staff and the guide inside the pewter factory explained to us the history of how Pewter mining opened up the market for Malaysians. Good to know visit, but very expensive. No doubt they look nice, but a beer mug could cost you 200-300MYR. Onyx it seems is supposed to be a healer when used as a massager. We picked up a small Onyx bracelet from Pewter factory. Next was the Watch factory showroom. The place was full of tourists waiting to look and buy branded watches, sun glasses & handbags. We didn’t buy anything, just looked around and stepped out.

Batu Caves

Next came the much awaited one- Batu caves. The temple dedicated to Lord Murugan has a beautifully constructed golden statue of the Lord outside. Inside the caves there are several small temples to be visited apart from the main temple of murugan. On the outside near the parking space they have a small water pond with lots of colorful fishes in it and a small bridge to walk over the water and lots of temples around to visit. We were to be given only 20 mins in this place by the guide, but V insisted that we given more time here rather than in commercial places like the watch factory. So we got to spend about 45 mins. My dad, V, kids & I decided to walk up to the caves. Mum stayed back to keep my mum-in-law company. Mum-in-law couldn’t have climbed 272 steps for sure. While mum-in-law and mum explored and visited all the temples below, we climbed up to the caves.

Next was Genting Highlands. It was I think a 1.5hrs journey to Genting. Upon reaching, Mr.Dana quickly took us inside and routed us to the Cable car section saying he had a VIP pass…so no waiting in the queue for us unlike others who had to stand in a long queue to reach the cable car. The cable car ride here was really nice. Much more cooler than Langkawi cable car as the weather was cloudy. Mist, clouds, greenery all around, mountains…really beautiful.

We were booked for Snow world. This turned out to be a total disappointment. We have been to Snow city in Bangalore and I think Bangalore team has done a great job in putting together the games inside. The size of Snow world is more or less the same as Snow city. Snow city Blore has a coffee shop inside & sliding on tube and sliding on board games. Snow world @ genting had the option of those slide games but the staff there had closed the gates and walked away. The staff supporting the distribution of Jackets/ boots/ gloves is much more cooperative in Blore as compared to KL. Eg: You say that the boots is too tight for you, Blore staff will give you the next size. In KL first of all you can’t make out the size you have been given and secondly without even checking what was given to you in the first place, next one would be given…it could turn out that this would be smaller than the earlier one. :-D After walking into snow world we had nothing to do but to walk around. Wasted effort of finding a jacket, shoe & glove that fit. I think we wasted more time finding these things than staying inside the place. We were out in less than 10 mins. Casino & video games is the highlight of Genting Highlands. Since we had kids with us, we didn’t venture into Casino. We explored Genting walking around and moving on escalators. They have china street food, vacation themed street for kids, Joy rides for kids, lots of restaurants, an Open stage where we got to see a local troops dance performance. Kids enjoyed playing video games. Lunch was at Curry in a Hurry. You get Good indian veg food which is reasonably priced. We had chapatti dal, paratha dal, Dosa & watermelon juice. Quick and good service, this place is big and has enough tables to comfortably sit and enjoy your lunch. Kids also tried out Donut & Peanut butter mousse at another bakery joint in between. We were done by 6pm. Mr.Dana had told us that he would be at the hotel lobby by 6.30pm, but turned up only at 7.00pm.

Again a long ride back to the hotel and since it was already late we asked Mr.Dana to take us to dinner first and then drop us back to the hotel. He took us to Sangeetha for dinner- Masala & ghee dosas. Very satisfying meal and then back to the hotel.

V wanted to go in for a massage at the Grand seasons spa. Previous night also we had enquired but there was waiting for 30 mins. I wanted a foot massage and on both the days I was refused saying only body massage available. Well, V was away for an hour while I enjoyed watching movie “The Intern” on the television. Unfortunately in the neighboring room I could hear laughter of boys (sounded like they were right there in my room) and the cigarette smoke from their room filling mine (because of the common door). Around 11pm it all quietened and zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Day 6::

Our flight from KL to Trichy was on Day 7 , 7.40am flight. Since Day 6 was a Sunday all the flight tickets were booked so the earliest we got was Monday morning flight. Since we were to check-out we had our Buffet breakfast and went back to our rooms to freshen up & pack. We checked out at 12pm and ended up waiting in the lobby for Mr.Dana until 2.00pm. Loaded our luggage into the mini van and started our touring with Lunch at Sangeetha, this time we had mini meals- really delicious and filling. It was supposed to half day city tour day. Weather in Malaysia is either sunny or rainy. We experienced both on this day.


@Kings Palace

We first visited the Kings Palace- Istana Negara. Grand & large palace with lush green lawn. We were allowed to walk only until the gates which was guarded by 2 Guards standing inside guard posts on either side of the gate. On our way to the Kings palace we also got to see the Parliament house of Kuala Lumpur.

Menara KL Tower & Petronas Twin Towers is pretty much visible from anywhere in the city. The grandeur of the twin towers is seen at night…it looks as though the whole structure has been constructed with diamonds. We wanted to go visit the Petronas tower but were told that you need to book the tickets to visit it atleast 3 days in advance and the cost per person is approx. 80MYR. So we gave it a miss and enjoyed the view from the outside.

National Monument

Next was the National Monument- Tugu Negara- This place welcomes you first with a pillar which is dedicated to the soldiers who died in World War. Then is a beautiful visual of water fountain and a monument of seven soldiers- Each figure denotes one of seven qualities: courage, leadership, sacrifice, strength, suffering, unity and vigilance. This is a must visit. The bronze sculpture really gives you a sense of what a soldier stands up for.

Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square or Independence Ground- A large ground with lawn and a small patch which tells us that this ground is used to play Cricket. And the ground is surrounded by structures built by the British. Huge flagpole & a giant TV screen. The structures look beautiful…you will know what am talking about…take a look the picture. Our tour guide said that their independence day celebrations take place here in the large ground. We spent quite sometime here taking pictures. The open ground ensured cool breeze.

Orchid & Hibiscus Garden

A break from the visits and we went back to Gopala for a cup of hot tea and milo for the kids. Next was the Flower Park or Orchid & Hibiscus garden- The park turned out to be an unexpected surprise with beautiful Orchids blooming everywhere. Large fountain, variety of flowering plants and many more varieties of Orchids is what we got to see. Those who love gardening, are sure to spend more than an hour in this place. As we walked by, we saw an arched entrance into the Hibiscus garden. Got to see the tiniest to the largest hibiscus here and a variety of colors. The visit to the park/ garden was a treat to the eyes. No entrance fees here except on weekends. There is toilet facility if required too. The park is just opposite the bird park. We missed visiting the Bird park. Have heard that its worth what we pay for, but we had to give it a miss. Am keeping this for next time :-P

Little India

Little India- We didn’t stop here, but got to see it while driving down. The street definitely looks like India with arches on the sides of the road. It looks as colorful as it has been shown in the pictures in the hyperlink I have provided. Little India was inaugurated by our then Prime minister Manmohan Singh & Malaysian Prime minister. All the shops are those you would find mostly in South India like the jewellery shops, saree shops, salwar kameez stores, Indian restaurants etc.

Shopping fun begins

I enjoyed the shopping experience here- Central market. This place gives you a sense of street shopping, but within Air conditioned environment. From the traditional batik prints, wood carvings, souvenir, chocolates, and T-shirts, you will everything here. Great place to shop everything you need. Carry enough money to do your shopping here. Falling short, then you have a currency exchange counter too. We bought lots of chocolates, t-shirts, batik print scarf for gifting it to relatives & friends. I was eyeing on some batik print shirts…but didn’t pick it…may be next time… :-D calls for one more trip to KL eh! On the opposite side of the road is the China street/ China market. Here you can shop for bags & clothes. Shopping here gets a little difficult as the vendors do not display the prices of the goods they are selling. When you ask for price, they quote exorbitant rates and then when you start to walk away they start with negotiating and asking you to quote on how much you are willing to pay. Shopping at Central market is pretty much easier. But if you want to pick up bags, china market would be best.

By the time we were done with shopping it had started raining. We jumped into the mini van at around 8.30PM. A wet dinner… was at a restaurant in Little India, very average food.

By 10.00PM we were at the airport. Gave Mr.Dana 150MYR for the extra 3hrs he spent with us and offloaded all our luggage to the airport trolleys.

We had a long wait until next day morning 4.00AM before the action could begin for checking in. My mum-in-law and kids slept on the chairs at the waiting lounge. Dad & mum took short naps. V & I walked around trying to kill time. Picked up a regular cappuccino from StarBucks and sipped on. Am glad that we picked just one glass…I wouldn’t have been able to drink so much coffee. Went to the “Rest & Go” space, pushed in 5MYR each and sat on the massage chairs for 10 mins. This one is a must try after a hectic day. The international airport duty-free store has higher prices compared to the domestic ones, so we didn’t do any shopping here. Somehow killed time walking around and talking. At 4.00AM we were busy doing self-checkins and baggage check-ins. Adjusted the weight of our bags to ensure we don’t over exceed the baggage limit. 7.40AM we were on our return flight to Trichy. At Trichy it was pouring at 9.30AM. We freshened up at the airport and started our drive back home to Blore. Breakfast was planned at Sangeeta which is close to the airport, but that was closed and soon enough we realized that all the restaurants were closed on Monday morning. When we enquired with a few cops on the way, we got to know that it was Tamilnadu elections and we would find something only on Salem highway. We managed our breakfast with some tea and bun. Stopped next at Kamat for lunch. Being a bundh day nothing was available, managed to get some Rice & Dal. By 6.00PM we were home.

A wonderful memorable trip had come to an end. For V & I it was worth everything. We wanted to make sure that kids and parents came back happy with happy memories. We wanted them to be inspired to go for more such trips and hoping we managed to.
